Fillings invole removal of damaged (carious) tooth structure and replacing it with a biocomaptiable material. It is a straight forward procedure usually but left unattended can cause tooth pain. Sometimes a tooth may have to be numbed. These fillings can be tooth coloured .

Sometimes the decay reaches the central nerve of the tooth which leads to a painful condition and sometimes infection. Such teeth can be saved by adequately removing all decayed part and the infected nerve and the filling it with a bio compatiable material which seals it and prevents any bacteria from causing further infection.
